Title: The Impacts of Anti-Black Racism in Psychology: How "Whiteness" structurally sustains anti-Blackness in psychology.
About: Psychology has historically relied on pseudoscientific findings that contributed to the dehumanization of Black people. The dominance of "Whiteness" within the field reinforces racial hierarchies and anti-Black racism, positioning Whiteness as the default standard. Black scholars continue to face systemic anti-Black racism within this framework. To address these issues, psychology must go beyond superficial diversity efforts and actively work to dismantle the structures of Whiteness.
Implications: The recommendations focus on supporting Black scholars and dismantling anti-Blackness in psychology by fostering community, promoting culturally sustaining and anti-oppressive research, advancing work that addresses systemic inequities, prioritizing Black joy and self-care, and committing to mentorship. The field must confront systemic biases, value Black scholars, and center Black experiences to achieve equity.

Implications: Grounded in critical consciousness and liberation psychology principles, these cases in this series will assist you in understanding and challenging how anti-Black racism and White Heterosexual Male Privilege (WHMP) show up in our training programs, clinical settings, academic classrooms, collegial interactions, meetings, and more.
Research Overview
My program of research focuses on the intersectionality of race and sexuality among Black and Black LGB people and their experiences of discrimination and racism. Specifically, I hope to understand (1) how systemic racism and oppression impact the health and well-being of these communities (e.g., substance use), (2) community protective factors that enhance well-being, liberation, and healing, (3) and eradicating systemic racism and oppression through health policy. My work has been supported by several national organizations, such as the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the APA Minority Fellowship Program, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. For collaborations, send me an email at tyrobin.umd.edu.
